Angola
Information on the filing of Patents, Designs and trademarks in Angola

PATENT REGISTRATIONS

Angola is not a member of PCT but does recognise claims to priority provided the application is filed within 12 months of the first filed application.

The requirements for filing an application in Angola are as follows:

(a) Power of Attorney (signed, notarised and legalised up to an Angolan consul or with an Apostille in accordance with the provisions of the Hague Convention) - can be late filed within two months;
(b) Specification, claims, drawings, and abstract in Portuguese - required on the day of filing;
(c) Assignment of Invention (signed, notarised and legalised up to an Angolan consul or with an Apostille in accordance with the provisions of the Hague Convention) - can be late filed within three months; and
(d) Certified copy of the priority document with verified Portuguese translation - can be late filed, within three months.

The application can be filed with an English specification provided a verified Portuguese translation is filed within one week of the application filing date.

We estimate that the cost for filing a patent application in Angola will be between about US$ 1800.00 and US$ 2000.00 (including the first annuity which is payable upon filing the application). Late filing of documents incurs a further charge of about US$ 200.00 per filing (not per document). The translation of any documents from English to Portuguese will cost about US$ 20.00 per 100 words, if required.
